What is the difference between a Freelance and a Consultant?

I want to know what is the real difference between providing consulting services and just being a freelance?
What is the difference if any in terms of skills, salary, responsabilities?
Does any one knows where to look for consultant jobs?

Freelancing is one way of being a consultant.
The other way is to be employed with a consulting company.
For eg, you may be employed full time by Accenture or Deloitte or any other consulting firm. You are paid like any other employee, so you get vacation, benefits and all the other normal perks The one major difference is that you have to travel extensively.

Freelancing is more like self employment. You can form your own company, usually S corp (if only husband and wife are the employees) and provide services to companies just like any other consulting company and but you get paid directly the client.

Freelancing is usually done by people who have more experience and/ or contacts. Its pretty hard to get gigs with less experience. You make more money freelancing simply because you are eliminating the middle man ( the consulting company). Also, there is more flexibility when you are a freelancer.

What kind of consultant job are you looking for, there are many areas in consulting like IT services, Financial services, Supply chain management to name a few.

What is the best websites to find the cheapest freelancers for website design and database programming?

November 252009

I wish to post a web design project which needs some database programming, but I have a very low budget. I’d be grateful if someone could help me out…

www.guru.com

you put your job online (free) and get a bunch of pros and freelancers to bid on it. you can contact them by phone and ask questions. you then pick out the best one for your needs and none of this costs you anything.

Do you know some online magazines that pay for work from freelance writers if the work is good? ?

I know The Escapist does. Are there any more like that? Preferably with a sense of humour?

There are many different options for someone trying to break into the writing business. These websites could help.

Oboulo.com is a publicly authored, publicly accessible database covering a wide array of topics. Each time you publish a paper, article, presentation etc. on the website, you will receive $15.00 in royalties. Create an account and enter ambassador # 9590ba to earn $15 per published article.

After connecting to the site, you will be asked to enter an ambassador number. By entering ambassador# 9590ba you’ll receive $15 per document published.

This is a good place to start to get your name out there and some published articles under your belt.

Next, go to the Associated Content website and sign up as a writer. Submit as many articles as you can. The payment varies, but they are generous.

Good luck!

What is the % of cash I should stash away from a $40K Freelance Job for taxes?

November 252009

Illinois tax rate, if it helps. Looking to the actual (or close to) percentage so I can just put that away into a CD and earn a little interest on it before I turn it over to Uncle Sam next year.

If that’s your only income for the year, around 31% should do it for federal and state income tax, and for self employment tax. But if you just save it and pay at the end, you’ll be subject to penalties for underwithholding. You are required to make quarterly estimated payments.

I would like to become a freelance writer for newspapers and magazines?

November 252009

Does anyone know of specific newspapers or magazines that you can send in articles for publication?

I want be freelance and get things published. Any specific magazines or newpapers would be appreciated or even a place to look on the web that would have said information.

Thanks

Other than getting work as a paid writer first, to achieve the professionalism required for free-lancing, find the market you want to write for, and tailor your writing to fit it. If you have written some articles that you think are publishable, have an active, working editor to review and critique them to find out what you need to learn. I would suggest writing in a specialty you have working experience in, getting a good writing handbook by Prentiss-Hall or some other reputable publisher, learn the standards and styles of the magazine, and, in particular, the interests and needs of the reading audience to which you wish to appeal.

How do I jump into a freelance writing career?

November 252009

I’ve written several things for myself and various companies that I’ve worked for, but writing has always been my passion and I’m wondering how exactly one just jumps into the career.

With the web at your finger tips I would recommend starting a blog. This will help you practice your writing while receiving feedback on your work. This form really leaves you with many options since a blog has no restrictions. However where you go from there really depends on what kind of writing you want to do. Contacting local newspapers and trying to get editorials is also a great way to jump start a freelance writing career. You could also contact current blogs that are successful and see if they are in need of writers. Just remember it’s one fo the most under-appreciated careers and most likely your paycheck won’t increase.
