Freelance Writer

It is something I have always wanted to do and, being as I am about to finish Uni and ‘fly the nest’ for the first time, I finally have my chance to pursue my ambition.

I have purchased a cheap, reliable SLR and have brought my photography skills up to scratch, as well as enrolling on several writing courses to improve my style.

As I am just starting out I will have a regular 9-5 desk job, and practice journalism in my own time to earn a bit on the side- therefore I am not wholly reliant upon my skills as a beginner. In brief, what do I need to know to get started? I’m in the UK, by the way.

Do ‘Investigative Journalists’ really exist or are they just a part of Hollywood crime drama? This is an area I’d really like to work in, if it is as lucrative a field as we are led to believe!

Among my chief attributes are tenacity, patience, and eye for detail and a willingness to constantly push at my personal barriers to reach my goal- are these good for a journalist?

I am very envious! You certainly possess the skills and attributes required. Now all you need is the experience. There is a website called www.nowpublic.com which you should find interesting. It gives you the ability to create your own news stories and should be the perfect way to nurture your photo-journalistic skills as well as interact with people with the same interest. I havent had the time to post my own stories on this site, but I have had some of my pictures used on this website. I posted my pictures on www.flickr.com and have had emails asking for permission to use my pics on nowpublic.

So I’ve been working a regular 9-5 since I’ve finished my degree, but I’ve been asked on several occasions if I would do some freelance work.

I’d be happy to do the work, but I’m not sure what to charge. It would be for web-related software engineering work (PHP, CSS, XHTML, etc.). What would be a reasonable hourly rate to charge?
This is for a relatively small client (a web development firm).

I have extensive experience with web development, but I am also just out of college.

Depends on your location, your skill level, and the size of your client. Generally, if you’re straight out of college, you’re not going to have a lot of references or much in your portfolio–outside of school work–to show a potential client, so you may have trouble getting top dollar.

I’d shoot for around $50/hr starting out. Most people will ask you to make an estimate for a job instead of taking you on hourly. Take the amount of time you think it will require, double it, and multiply times $50–with luck, you’ll break even in the end.

As demand for your services grows, you can raise your rates.

If your interests lie in ethnic designs, you may want to do some photo essays on some of the premiere weavers in South Carolina.

Photojournalism is a great way to explore cultures anywhere in the world. You may start out shooting for a small paper and as you get better known in the industry, you may be able to get a newspaper or magazine to let you do a self-directed assignment. If you are at all successful, you may find yourself traveling to destinations of your choice, exploring those subjects that interest you. Throughout photojournalist history, those kinds of photographer personalities pass through from time to time. Eugene Smith comes to mind but there have been others. Why not you?

My dream has always been to write. I am currently an English major and write regularly. My husband and I decided that if I could make $30,000 or more in one year freelancing part time around my full time job, part time school and family, that I would leave my crappy job and freelance full time. I’m not even sure if this is the correct term but the way it was described to me is that a person who is a freelance writer and loves to travel. The articles you would write is about the things you saw on your travels. Where can I get some info on this? Such as their salaries, the job profile etc.
