It varies, some get paid a set sum, and others are paid by the word, you could check with the writers guild to find out the amounts.
I have done some reasearch on copywriting. It seems to be a very interesting and profitable career field. However, I have no clue on how anyone would go about starting a career in this field. I am particularly interested in freelance copywriting. I was wondering if anyone out here had any good advice or tips on how to start out in this business. I would like to start on a part time basis doing freelance work and hopefully take it from there.

I work full time and also freelance on the side. I am going to go on maternity leave in the near future and might have the opportunity to work on a freelance project. If I’m collecting SDI from CA, am I allowed to freelance during that time? What about FMLA pay too?
If you aren’t allowed to work during that time, is there a way to work on projects and then bill the client after the leave/SDI/FMLA ends? I will claim taxes on it, and I don’t want to be prosecuted for fraud. ??

You start one job at a time and build a resume that will "sell" you and your work to other buyers. You submit work to people who accept unsolicited submissions, and you submit work to "calls" for specific work. It will take time . . . and in the mean time a steady job is handy.

It’s recommendable that you contribute to a few publications for free so you have something to show the people who you want to write for (for payment).

Click the top right corner "Write for Us" and it gives you the application and asks for a bio of yourself. Is this not actually your question? It seems pretty straight forward on the site, although I didn’t go through the whole process to see what happens since I’m not applying to write for them.
Here are some things I found by searching "amature freelance writing jobs", but you may have to try it to narrow the criteria to where you live. Are you looking for something strictly online or a local publisher, etc.

I live in the northeast United States and have won several writing contests. I’d like to make some money with my talent, but I don’t think I can, being a minor. Does anyone know if I can write freelance as a minor? Anybody know someplace I can, if so? My strengths could include advice columns, video game reviewing, or blogging. Also short stories.
if your writing is good enough, it will sell – age is irrelevant – "freelance" work is not a steady paying job – you might sell one story a year or one a month – YOU have to do all the legwork finding who is paying for stories and then go thru the application process
I remember stumbling upon this website last year but can no longer remember the URL. Freelance journalist post their story ideas to the site, and if a person chooses, he or she may donate to that journalists cause.
