A Culture Within A Culture
April 92010
Ybarra takes us inside a culture within a culture and shows how if not properly nurtured, customs and languages once thought to be commonplace will fall by the wayside. He states these stunning facts to illustrate this point, “…it has been reported that Spanish is the primary language for the majority (73%) of first generation immigrants. However, for second generation children, it drops to 40%, and more impressively down to 1% for third generation grandchildren.” Dr. Ybarra too illustrates that having a common history creates a sense of unity as he further states, “…living in the United States means we have to face a majority of people who as a whole, would systematically negate the experiences as well as the contributions of any group of people that do not look, sound, or act like them.”
