Should you have to pay when looking for a job / freelance work?

February 162010

I have signed up on a website called Translatorsbase.com. They send me several job requests that fit my criteria, but if I want to take the job, it says I must purchase full membership, which is $129 a year. How do I know this is not a scam?

How do I win a Freelance Job?

February 92010

I want to win a job on Elance.com. I just started so I have no previous work listed on the site but have a good portfolio from 2 previous employers I posted. I just need to start somewhere.

Should I try offering my services for dirt cheap just to get experience as a freelancer (say $50 for a logo design) or $7-8 /hr. I am a great designer but can’t seem to win a bid. I also might try to guarantee my work.

$7-8???!!! Damn man, that’s close to minimum wage. Don’t undersell yourself. A lot of newer designers think they can win jobs by undercutting prices on the competition, but this can work against you.

Professionals know that designers cost money, and the really good ones cost alot (and rightfully so), but when they see your prices they may be thinking that nobody who knows what they’re doing and has confidence in their work would charge so little.

If you think about it…it makes sense. Say you went shopping for a car and a listing in the paper said "2009 Ford Mustang – never been driven……$100 bucks". Sounds to good to be true, and things like that usually are. That may be what’s scaring potential clients from your service.

Don’t forget, you have a specialized skill that demands fair compensation, and while it may feel counter-intuitive to charge good money for your work, that’s what you should be doing. You’ll be doing yourself and our profession a favor.

I am being laid off and I plan on collecting unemployment. Until I find a new job can I freelance?

February 22010

I live in Indiana and I am being laid off from a full time position so I will be eligible for unemployment. Until I find a new full-time job, can I look for freelance work? I understand I have to report all work/wages I would earn from freelancing (and it would most likely be deducted from my unemployment benefits) but is it okay to freelance since in essence I would be self employed?

as long as you report all income yes you can

How do I include freelance work on a job application?

January 242010

I’ve been doing freelance work for a local newspaper for the past six months, but I’m not sure if that counts as me being "currently employed" for the sake of job applications. Should I say "yes," and if so, should I put myself as the employer? What should I put for salary info, hours worked, etc. I’m so confused! Help!

you are self-employed, it counts and should be used presuming you have a good relationship currently. list the hours you do work, don’t focus on the salary, let the recruiting process establish that. best of luck!

how can i get a freelance graphic design job?

January 222010

im a student in a Tech college majoring in Graphic Design. Wehre can I find a freelance design job? =/

Good question, there are a number of resources online to get started, graphic designer Jacob Cass of Just Creative Design has a great article outlining the many avenues you can take to getting freelance gigs while in school, it’s called "How and where to get paid freelance work while you are still a design student: you should check it out. Branded Designers is a blog that gives you marketing advice on your design portfolios and styleapple.com is launching a site this month to help showcase your work giving you maximum exposure to potential clients. Hope this helps.

When a provider is bidding on a freelance job if he wins does that mean that he’ll have to pay the bid amount?

January 202010

Does that mean he’ll have to pay his employer for work?I’m confused.

I think what you’re asking is, how does it work when people have to put in bids for a job.

For example, my firehouse needs a new roof. We ask for bids from companies. Company A bids $10,000. Company B bids $12,000. What that means is, Compay A will perform the work if we pay them $10,000, and Company B will do the job if we pay them $12,000. We would go for the lowest bid, Company A, and we would pay them $10,000 for the new roof.

Does that help?

Can I claim the total mileage on my taxes to and from work for a freelance job?

January 162010

It’s 36 miles round trip. Can I claim all of that times the number of days I go to work?

Thanks for your help.

If this is a second job and you drive from the first one to the second one you can deduct the one-way miles from the first to the second. Otherwise it’s not deductible.
