Any particular level of college degree? (My highest level is an associates…so far).
I’ve had lots of heavy writing classes, along with science & technology classes. But since I’m at the associates degree level, I’m wondering if maybe it’s possible I could find some kind of junior level science writer type of job with a magazine, etc.
The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you’re interested in.
Associations may be a good avenue to explore as well. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you’ll inevitably have as well as many you haven’t anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.
Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

I live in the northeast United States and have won several writing contests. I’d like to make some money with my talent, but I don’t think I can, being a minor. Does anyone know if I can write freelance as a minor? Anybody know someplace I can, if so? My strengths could include advice columns, video game reviewing, or blogging. Also short stories.
if your writing is good enough, it will sell – age is irrelevant – "freelance" work is not a steady paying job – you might sell one story a year or one a month – YOU have to do all the legwork finding who is paying for stories and then go thru the application process

Maybe you could be a bit more specific. Most writers have a particular area of expertise (fiction, documentary, biography, satire, etc.). When you determine which area is your niche, your next step would be to research the type of publications that print your style of writing and what the requirements are for publication. Some magazines won’t take any freelance work, but some are quite agreeable.
It’s a tough way to make a living. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for years, but the need to eat won out over the need to create.

You don’t specify what type of writing you are interest in, but opportunities exist. There are plenty of magazines and some newspapers accepting free-lance work. You can do the some of research on the Internet and write at home. Free-lance pay depends on subject matter, publications, and YOUR motivation.

With the web at your finger tips I would recommend starting a blog. This will help you practice your writing while receiving feedback on your work. This form really leaves you with many options since a blog has no restrictions. However where you go from there really depends on what kind of writing you want to do. Contacting local newspapers and trying to get editorials is also a great way to jump start a freelance writing career. You could also contact current blogs that are successful and see if they are in need of writers. Just remember it’s one fo the most under-appreciated careers and most likely your paycheck won’t increase.
