Can unpaid writing/editing work be considered freelancing?

As a career, I work in media, specifically periodical. For the past few years, I have been providing unpaid columns for a friend’s website, merely for fun and to build my writing skills. Could this work be considered freelancing, or is it merely volunteer as it is unpaid and at my leisure?
That would be stretching the truth. They would probably want to see references to your writing.
