How can i start out as a freelance photographer?

December 22009

I have a professional camera and would like to know how i can start out as a freelance photographer? where can i go to spread the word, who should i start photographing, etc. Also, what kind of inexpensive editing software would i need and what other tools or equipment should i purchase? I have paint shop pro 9.0, is this good or should i go with something else?

First you need to develop an "eye" for pictures.

Most any editing software is good these days once you learn to use it. I still use paintshop 5.0 to restore antiques photos and it works very well.

Plan on shooting about 25 rejects for every keeper.

Being a freelncer is basically like have your own small business.

Are you going to go to the clients or do you want them to come to you? You might consider having your own studio set up in your hme, unless you want to do something like weddings. It’s best to pick and choose exactly what kind of photography you want to do.

Advertise the same way any company would, posters, ads in newspapers, phone books, tv ads, whatever you can afford.

Adobe Photoshop is the top image editing software out there. Paint shop is decent, but it’s worth spending the money to get Photoshop, your choice.

A lot of freelance photographers start small, they photograph their friends and families, build a portfolio, so then you have something to show for all those ads :)

Also, get business cards, a whole stack of them. You never know when the opportunity arises, when you’re out and about, and you need a business card. Hand them out whenever people ask about your photography.

    Good luck! :)

You might start by capitalizing the first word of sentences you write, and the word "i". Potential employers tend to like people who are literate.
