How difficult is it to break into the editing/proofreading industry? What’s the difference between the two?

I live in Tasmania, Australia. I am thinking of doing a course in editing and proofreading, simply because I’m the biggest grammar nazi I know and I think I’d be good at this. How useful are the courses in breaking into the industry? Are these services required regularly? Is the work mostly freelance?
