Am I allowed to freelance for a Canadian company, while living in Canada, without a work permit?

I want to start doing freelance proofreading. Since I’ve been living in Montreal for several years most of my contacts are with Canadian companies and organizations. However, since I’m an international student enrolled in school part-time, I’m apparently not allowed to work ANYWHERE. Does this rule apply to freelance work as well as regular jobs? I can apply for a work permit once I graduate in May, but until then is anything allowed?

If you stay in Canada once you graduate, you will need permission to do so. Your activity is illegal if you do not have the permission that you need.

If you get deported you cannot reapply.

If you’ve been living here for "several years" surely you would know that you cannot work while on just a student permit. Any money you earn you would have to declare as income come tax time. Without a work permit, your illegal act would be discovered.
You might want to try contacting the immigration department to see if you can apply for a work permit while you are also studying.
However, for you to have obtained a study permit, you would have had to satisfy immigration officials that you had enough money to support yourself throughout your time as a student.

You are not allowed to work! End of story. No getting around it, no working under the table, no freelancing, no work-at-home, no own-your-own-business, no other euphemisms. Foreign students are not allowed to work!

NOT without a work permit. You are on a STUDY permit.

And no you cant proof read even as a volunteer – because that will take the paying job away from a legal canadian resident.

you should already have had sufficient money to support yourself when you arrived?
what did you do with your money? gamble it away?

there is a work permit for students but it does restrict what you can do and where you can do it.
