When you go around the neighborhood and check out the roofs of the houses, what you see is the outer most portion of the roofing. The asphalt roof shingles or the wood shakes are important in their own right since they basically serve as the skin of the roof. The hidden part of the roof, however, the unseen portion underneath the shingles or roof tiles, is quite as important as any part of the house.
The roof deck; this is the surface area underneath the shingles; and all the other types of roofing materials, is typically made of wood. The integrity of this part of the house is crucial since this is where the roof shingles will eventually rest. The condition of the roof deck should be carefully assessed once or twice every year as part of your roofing maintenance.
